Planning Permit issued for GreenH2CY

PRESS RELEASE / 15.10.2024

Another important milestone in the implementation of the pioneering and innovative project for the production of green hydrogen in Cyprus has been achieved!!
The issuance of the Planning Permit on 25/9/2024, following the approval of the project by the Council of Ministers, essentially paves the way for the implementation of the first project for the production of green hydrogen for use in transport, with the significant avoidance of approx. 2,200 tons of CO2 per year, marking the beginning of a new era of de-carbonization of transport.
Cyprus is making significant steps towards the energy transition, with the progress of the GreenH2CY green hydrogen project well underway, with a project implementation horizon of 2025/2026. This project is a central pillar for the promotion of renewable energy in the country – particularly for the transport sector – and the achievement of Cyprus’ ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, actively contributing to the mitigation of climate change.
The main benefits of the project are:
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: The use of green hydrogen contributes significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions, making Cyprus one of the pioneering countries in the Mediterranean region to adopt such innovative technologies.
Energy autonomy: With the development of green hydrogen, Cyprus is reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, enhancing the country’s energy security.
Creation of new jobs: The implementation of the project leads to new employment opportunities, both in the renewable energy sector and in related sectors associated with hydrogen and energy storage infrastructure.
Technological innovation: The development and implementation of green hydrogen technology paves the way for innovation and specialisation of Cypriot industry in clean energy technologies.

With the continued progress of the project, Cyprus is strengthening its role in the energy transition and demonstrating its commitment to achieving its environmental goals. Green hydrogen, as the fuel of the future, is expected to play a key role in the move towards a more sustainable and green economy.
